Dear Companion Pet Lovers ~
Some sad news regarding the seizure of companions from "breeder" Clara Vowell of Sullivan County, IN...
As many of you may recall, Clara was first reported to us in May 2007 (see below). A USDA complaint was filed shortly thereafter, and it's my understanding she recently lost her USDA license.
On Oct. 8, Indiana State Police responded to a complaint that the animals were in poor health, underfed and living in squalid conditions. Clara voluntarily gave up permanent custody of 67 animals, which were turned over to HSUS and Monroe County Humane Association. In total, Clara had more than 200 animals on her property, including about 150 dogs, 35 to 50 cats, 25 to 30 horses and eight to 10 ponies, all of various breeds, according to an initial State Police report. Michael Staub, a veterinarian and medical director of the rescue effort, previously described what he saw at the Fairbanks property as "pretty atrocious." Cages were full of animal waste, and there was a strong ammonia smell from urine. Most of the dogs had skin parasite problems including fleas and sarcoptic mange. Some dogs were malnourished.

Everyone,
I just received this information from the independent rescue that picked up the two basenjis she mentions. She and two other "experienced" puppy mill busters are working to get as many dogs as possible away from this 74 year old lady before getting local animal control involved. There are between 200 and 500 dogs on this lady's farm. They are aware of 150 rat terriers alone with 47 litters on the way in that breed!!
What I promised to do was pass along this information about the different breeds they identified when visiting this mill yesterday. Dawn asked for any contact names we might have for other "breed specific" rescues that she might use for reference as they continue to raid this breeder's stock. The fear is that there are so many animals in this group that the local animal control will be overwhelmed once this is reported and will euthanize many of the breeds. That is why the removal of dogs has started with Dawn and the other two mill busters.
Dachshunds were the only breed she thought they had a handle on with the breed rescue, but was sure they would need multiple contacts for the breeds mentioned below. If anyone knows of ANY other breed specific rescue contacts, please pass the information to me separately and I will share with Dawn and her group.
BTW - We believe there were only 2 basenjis (which I now have) as the breeder decided they were too independent and troublesome for her to handle. Here are the two I brought home tonight:
17 mo old brother and sister (picture above), still intact, starved and flea infested
