Today as I was walking Mr. Lucky in our local park I was stopped by a man who drives the local school bus who I wave to every day. He said that he knew that I was good to my dog and wanted to know if I would like to have another Siberian. He told me that his grandson and three other young men rented a house together and(no supprise here) not no one has time for the dog and that they were looking for a good home for her. She is 6 mo. old speyed and up to date with her shots. Very friendly and well socialised. Only fly in the ointment is I don't know about her prey drive; you see I also have 3 cats a rabbit and my sister's dog all living in the same house. My sister & her husband said ok as long as they all got along, that was another big hurdle but that went ok. I will see Mr Bus Driver tomorrow morning and work out the details of introduction. I've always wanted another Siberian since I had Lucky but was afraid to ask my family. The other reason is Mr. Lucky is getting old and I know he will not live forever. He gets along with other dogs very well and does perfer female dogs. He is the dominate dog in the house but not aggressive. I feel bad that one time someone offered me a beautiful white husky and I turned them down and the dog was hit by a car not long after and died. Any tips for introductions?

WOW, lucky you... #Awsome2# The dog whisperer says to walk the new dog for 45 mins before introducing her, have crates ready to seperate, the main thing is to be sure that you let her know that you are the pack leader, are the cats declawed? if not then I think she will soon learn not go after the cats, other wise if you have a crate everytime she goes after the cats then put her in her crate for say 5 mins. like a time out, she's young she'll get the message, if you let the rabbits out of their cages I would put the huskys in their crates... Maybe someone else has other ideas??

That sounds real good to me. She can certainly learn not to chase the cats indoors, but might still chase them outside. Rabbits may be a bit much for her, but lots of dogs do live with loose rabbits (again IN the house) without incident. Sure would be nice to give that little girl Sibe a home. (Edited because I typed in a standard smilie and the system showed it as the ROFL guy! Not what I meant.)

Thanks for all your advice and information. Concerning the cats and the rabbbit(only one for now) the cats have all their claws and Mr. Lucky didn't take long to respect them when I first got him and likewise with my sister's dog and the cats, the rabbit is in a big cage and only gets out when the dogs are not in the same room(why tempt fate?) we live in a very large 14 room house and there are lots of hidy places for the cats. I'm going to get a new crate as soon as I know when I'll get her and we will make our intros at the local fenced-in dog park, its neutral territory. Failing that we probably will do the intro in a local fenced in tennis court, they have a 12 ft fence enclosure, that's where we introduced Mr. Lucky to Ralphie my sister's Brittany Spaniel.

I think the chances are pretty good that they'll get along, at least the girl is only 6 months old, but their smart dogs, Shadow's 9 and she amazes me everyday with what she can learn... #THUMBSUP#

Well, I met with Mr. School bus Driver this am, but he was running late so we agreed to meet up again Monday at 9:15am and exchange info. I am worried that his grandson is having second thoughts and that would be a shame both for the poor dog and for me getting my hopes up. Maybe I'm just a little over anxious and excited anyway. I have an extra crate that I can have ready to place in my room after some furniture rearrangeing.

I met up with Mr. Bus driver and gave him my phone#; again he was running late due to an accident on his route so we didn't talk much. He called me but I missed his call due to some squabble with my sister & niece about staying off the phone. He left a message on the answering machine and said he'd call back later, well he didn't. I'm really getting a bad feeling about all this now. Maybe it's just me being overanxious.

After a bout of "phone-tag" we finally made contact, it appears that the young man wants to wait a little while longer before he gives her up, probably right before Christmas. This is ok by me. I found out that she's crate trained and semi-housebroken. They still have issues with her pooping in the house; said they'd try and work on it. I said that sounded more like a negative attention divice the dog does. Can be corrected with more attention and more consistant feeding & walking,I've had indoor "poopers" before and that's how I handled it. Grandson wants to come ut to my house and meet me too, I'd be glad to and told his grandfather it was ok and to just call.

Well that's good, ya gotta give them kudos for not taking the dog to the pound, alot of people would have done that...and it's probably hard for his grandson to give the dog up, I mean you know how addicting they are.

Well, I got some bad news for me, but good news about the dog that I was going to adopt. My friend said that his grandson's other set of grandparents have agreed to pay for obedience training and doggie-day care as needed and will be willing to work with helping him all they can to keep the dog, but if it still is needed to keep me in mind. I am happy for that young man that he found a way to keep his dog, but I was really looking forward to getting that dog. I probably will postpone the search for another dog until after the New Year, but I still want and am ready for another dog. I will be at home for a long time for a lot of intensive physical therapy for an old knee injury. I must walk as much as possible (no problem and Mr. Lucky is at the ready) and take tylonol if the pain starts to bother(Yup, every day, it hurts) I am considering getting a puppy now that I will have a lot of time on my hands, but I want to get one from a rescue of a shelter. Dog must be female or non-dominate male, preferabily a Siberian Husky or other northern breed and I can work with the puppy with the cat & rabbit issues. No small kids here to worry about at least, but I do care for my elderly mom who loves dogs too. After she passes and as long as I live in Md. I want to do rescue work but that will come later on.

Well that's good, I just wish there more people like them around. It's good for the dog and for the boy. You know even if you do get a puppy there is no guarrentee that it won't go after cat and rabbit both, looking for a husky that is use to cats, a younger husky, if it is good with cats it'll probably be good with rabbits. Walking is good, but it's too cold here for me to walk Shadow, it's 19 degrees out right now, that would really kill my lungs. I have a treadmill and I would like to get her on it, I tried a couple of times but it didn't work, oh well I'll try again I guess. There are so many out there that are need of rescue it's just hearbreaking, I always wanted to start a husky rescue but it wasn't meant to be I guess. Good Luck in your quest for another husky, let us know what happens. #THUMBSUP#

Today I went to the Dog-park at the local humane society; and low & behold there was a Siberian Husky in one of the holding pens just singing his little broken heart away. Needess to say I went in and discovered that there were also 3 more! None is younger than 5 though and I was hopeing for younger but maybe that will be ok. They still have to test for cat-friendly and intro to my dog & my sister's dog. I am hard pressed to choose from the four that I saw. Three others are in quarenteen for mange mites and are being treated. I just had Mr. Lucky treated last year for that. I don't want to bring anybody home untill they are clered up. Maybe if they would hold them untill They could be properly introduced I could make a good choice.

It was a very heart-breaking thing, seeing all those dogs all worthy of a good home and knowing what the fate will be for the majority of them. Four of them are Siberian Huskies and the fifth is a Sib/Shepard mix. I wish I was in a position to at least foster them but as it is I cannot due to time constraints and dealing with baltimore county animal control licenseing issues. We are only allowed to have 3 dogs per household and 3 cats. I then need to get what is known as a holding permit which costs more than I can put out about now and it also becomes a zoneing issue. Bah humbug. I went back yesterday in the pouring rain to see again the little red female thy call Blondie, she will be released from quarrentean Sat. She is 4 years old , cat friendly and dog friendly. 3rd Choice would be Balto, but somebody said that they thought she was a wolf-hybred(not legal in Md.) She is small too, about 45 lbs but also friendly. Poor Snowflake seemed either very old or depressed and didn't respond to me when I talked to her. Yanke Doodle is a large black & white male who seems dominant and wasn't kenneled with any other dog. He does seem to have a great personality; his dumb a---d owner turned him in because he was "tired of him running away". For God's sake the dog is 8 years old and probably smarter than the owner.

I can guarrantee that she isn't a wolf-hybrid, there are alot of husky/malamute/shepard mixes that are killed because some dummy along the way that said they had wolf in them. Call the husky rescues in Balitmore and see if they can't rescue these huskys.

Ta daaa; good news at last I have my Christmas baby. She is a very sweet little girl called Balto(More later about the name) She is almost 2 years old, gets along fine with Mr. Lucky(she follows him around in the play area like he was her big bro.) gets along with cats and gets along with my sister's dog and just loves the whole family. She does have a percentage of wolf in her heritage but I was told to just keep quiet about that. She is wolf grey color with brown eyes. She has to be spayed first before she can go home with me and is being treated for possible kennel cough. I'd like to give her a more suitable name but we are all still trying to decide on one that fits.

Balto was a male, but then I knew one dog whose name was Sophie and was a male dog, it's like a boy named sue.

I picked out a name for my little girl :Bella; my sister hates it though and wanted a more Native American name. I could only come up with Wayah(Sp?) Cherokee for wolf (also my great-great grandma's clan) or Tala (Lakota for wolf) Neither name sounds right coming form me with my nasal twang. Came up with another part of my heritage for Bella ( my last name is Italian, my Gret grandfather was born in Italy. I had fun at Petsmart today shopping for my new arrival. I hope she will be spayed soon, I would like her to be feeling ok for Christmas. In any case I have lots of time to devote to her. Mr. Lucky really enjoys playing with her in the dog play area. I'm glad that they have the facility available for us; it will give them both the off leash play time they will enjoy. Lucky does go out without his tie-out but only when I'm sick or the weather is really bad(of course I'm standing in the doorway to keep an eye out on him) It will be a long time before I will let Bella off leash though. The humane society does sponser obediance classes there and so does a church not too far from my home. The church sponsored one is more of an ongoing club kind of a thing so maybe we can do both. This is the most pre-Christmas excitement I've felt in a very long time.

Hooray! I got my little girl today around noon. So far she and Mr. Lucky are getting along very well with only one incident, but not a bad one. However, we've had two pee accidents and one poop accident. Bella wanted to get into Lucky's crate and he let her know that it was "off limits" with a warning nip. She is not the least interested in the cats but one gave her a warning swipe accross the nose and that was enough. She is curious about the rabbit but that seems like all it is. She chased a squirrel in the yard and ran along the fence line when she saw the deer that come out in the lower meadow. We are setteling in pretty well I think.
I still have to have her spayed and will make the appointment with my vet Monday, I made a deposit to the humane society but I'm a responsible person with my pets anyway so I know it will happen.

Bella is settling nicely in spite of all of the holiday chaos and some very personal tragedy. You see, my mom passed away on Jan 3; not unexpected, she was in hospice care for the last 10 months of her life. She got to see my new girl and smiled at her and reched out to pet her and mom understood why I got her. My parents, especially my mom, were the ones that taught me about the love of animals. I was a regular "bring 'em back alive" kid with all kinds of strays, orphans, etc. I have had everything from rabbits to snakes, but of course my first love is dogs, especially the northern breeds. Mom & dad tolorated it all but made sure that the critters were my responsibility and to love & respect them.
Bella was spayed on the 6th and had a difficult time. She still has some kind of digestive issue that caused a problem and she bled heavily when they removed her one ovary. The vet released me to my care the same evening because there were no overnight attendants. I made a box for her at the side of my bed & the vet called me twice throughout the night to keep tabs on us. It was like takeing care of a sick child. She was almost back to normal by Thurs. and now is just like the young puppy she really still is. It was hard to curtail her activities and walks. Stitches come out next Tues. then we will work on basic obedience and wild visits to the dog park. A tired dog is a happy dog. Housebreaking is going well concidering she never was in a house until I got her. She is younger than the techs at the humane society said she was, vet says she's more like 6-9 months old. As soon as my nephew can help me with the digital camera I will post some pics.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom, animals are a great comfort when we loose someone we love. Sounds like you're gonna have your hands full with her, but that's the fun of rescuing a dog so young, you can teach them what they need to know. Watch for her leaking in a year or so, spayed females, well if the surgery isn't done right, they leak, Shadow has leaked most of her life and with her having Cushing Disease [another problem caused by spaying] she leaks even more. She is on medication for it, but I think eventually she'll need different meds. I'm hoping that the cushings will hold off for another year. She is 9 years old already and I've read that they live about 2 years after being diagnosed with it, it'll be a year in May.
To tell you the truth I'm not even sure I'll get another husky, I have tendonitis in both my shoulders and it hurts, makes it hard to hang on to her when she pulls. I will get another dog, just sure what kind, probably a smaller one.
Please hurry and post some pictures can't wait to see them.

Update on my Bella: She has had a fortune of gastro problems. The vet has recommended a hypo alergenic diet of whitefish & potatos with an occaisional piece of white meat chicken and rice if she will tolorate it. Biggest problem is keeping her out of Mr. Lucky's food and from counter surfing and from my sister's family who don't seem to grasp the concept of no treats. Just when I thought everything was settled down she stole a link of raw Polish sausage out of the grocery bag and wolfed it down. It took less than 30 seconds for her to reach over the seat and grab & gulp. So far today she seems to be just a little on the loose diahreah side so I'm giving her pepto-bismo before feeding her and she seems settled down. She is one of those dogs that will eat anything that's within her reach. I'm working on basic commands like sit , stay, down, come. At least she thinks the dry food is a dandy training treat. I'm looking to enrole her in a training class soon and a club that meets at a near by church. Mr. Lucky got all anxious when I had to leave her at the vet's for two days. They play well together but when the old guy has had enough he just goes to his crate and gives her the eye. She respects him and then turns her attention to me. I am also dealing with getting her to stop biteing my hands & feet in play and get a squeeky toy instead. She did house break fairly quickly after about two weeks of "accidents", poor thing she really couldn't help it. My mom had three chihuahua dogs that were never housebroken and peed and pooped everywhere before I moved back home to care for her. I had the carpets professionally cleaned and it's been 13 years since then but she found all of their favorite spots. Lucky will have an occaisional slip up especially now that he's older. It was almost funny; I hang a bag for recycling cans & bottles on a doornob to the deck and he will pee on the blue bag. If I use a white bag, he won't pee on it.
I have a Chevy Equinox but I call it my Wolf-wagon. The first question out of everyone's mouth is always are they wolves? I got to get my nephew to get my pics here soon. Trouble is he works nights and sleeps days.

You know it's funny you should mention about Bellas tummy problems, I just took Shadow to the vet for the same thing, I have her on white rice, boiled chicken adn chicken broth until they go away - she also on a medication called Metronidazole, she takes it twice a day. She was really bad, complete water coming out of her, poor baby, her butt is so red and inflammed, she's doing better today though. You know her stealing that Polish sausage is probably what did her tummy in...You have to put things extra high on the counters cause huskys can reach where most dogs can't. Shadow nibbles on me, if I don't stop her it turns into a pinch and man does that hurt, I think that is something unique to huskys... You are gonna have fun training her, does Mr. Lucky sit there and watch or does he ignore what you're doing. Did you know that we are over at multiply.com too? sibelover.multiply.com/

How are Bella and Mr Lucky doing?

We are doing very well, thank you. Finally getting Bella weened off the perscription dog food, but the Eukanuba venison & potato dog food ain't cheap. I still have to watch her because she will grab almost anything and eat it. She looks like a Hoover going around the house and the yard. She especially likes to look for bits of stuff that fall from the suet birdfeeder and that gives her the mollygrubs.
Mr. Lucky is still holding up but you can see it's getting harder and harder for him to make his mind up to get up. Once he does though, he's ready for his walks, rides, treats and play-time.
I'm going to enroll Bella in obedience school today, Lord knows she needs it. She has two nasty habbits: she loves to play-bite and refuses to come when called.
