What is rawhide?
Rawhide dog chews are dried hypodermic interstitial tissue (second layer of the skin) from cattle raised for meat production. This hypodermic interstitial tissue is quite tough yet flexible, due to collagen fibers that link. During processing the animal's skin is split into inner and outer layers. The tougher outer layer is used for leather shoes, garments, and upholstery, while the softer inner layer is cut and formed into different shapes for dog chews. It is important to note that rawhide bones and chews made in USA are the absolute best for your dog.
How is rawhide made?
The first step in making rawhide chews is transportation of animal's hide to processing plants where it is split, washed with degreasers and detergents, and cleaned. The completely clean rawhide is then sterilized in hydrogen peroxide at the required temperature for the required amount of time. This also has a desired side effect of making the rawhide the yellow-white color you are familiar with.
The wet hides are wrung to remove excess water and slapped on to special cutting tables. With the help of electric knives, rectangular pieces of varying sizes and special shapes are cut from certain portions of the hide. These shapes are forwarded to the tying department where the shapes are rolled and folded to create the various forms (bones, rolls, twists, sticks etc.).
The final shapes are placed on trays and are carried on carts to drying rooms that are temperature controlled to assure drying but not melting. The product is then inspected again and either packaged for sale, or colored in the FDA approved colorings and flavorings, re-dried, and then packaged for sale
Why is rawhide so tough?
Animal hide is made tough, yet flexible, by collagen. This protein is also found in cartilage, muscles, bone, and teeth. When the collagen in animal hide is dried it becomes stiff. American rawhide is oven-dried to an exact consistency that softens slowly as dogs chew.
How often should I feed rawhide?
Though referred to as a treat, rawhide is not a food source. Instead, it is a chewable toy low in fat with few calories. When your dog has chewed on a piece of rawhide to the point where it has become soft, take that rawhide chew away and substitute another. Allow the softened rawhide to harden, and then it can be given back to the dog. When the rawhide becomes small enough to be swallowed, take it away from your pet. As with all treats and toys, however, supervise your pet's use of it at all times.
Are there any dogs that shouldn't have rawhide?
Your veterinarian should approve all the foods, treats, and toys you offer your pet. This is especially important for rawhide chews if your dog has a gastrointestinal disease, is restricted to a special veterinarian-recommended diet, or is allergic to beef. Caution should also be used with dogs that tend to swallow foods and treats whole. It is not a substitute for regular veterinarian dental exams and cleanings. But, for most pets, rawhide is a safe and beneficial chew toy.

Rawhide Dog Bones:
Choosing the perfect treat for your dog seems to be an easy thing but actually, it is not. Taking into account your dog's health is something that should be done with care especially in choosing the right food for him. Therefore, it is your responsibility to provide your dog with quality foods that will not just give him strength but also let him live in a healthy way.
There are actually several reasons that you must consider when choosing the right food for your dog. Remember that dogs are human counterparts and preparing their food should be as important as preparing our own food. One of the most important things to consider in choosing the right diet for your dog is his preference. Giving your dog hale and hearty bones that fit his unique taste is also like providing him a good health. In addition, your dog's age and medical condition also matters when picking the right treat for him. For puppies, smaller bone treats will definitely fit their age and digestive system. On the other hand, older dogs prefer soft treats because of their sensitive teeth. You also need to be more careful in choosing food for dogs with food sensitivities or allergies.

How do you know melamine additives aren't in rawhide treats? Because rawhide is almost pure protein - there is no need to add protein value. Products sold by i-pets.com, which state "USA" are made entirely in the United States from cattle hides raised and processed in the United States. No chemicals are used to process these rawhides - the process involves repeated washes with purified water to remove fats which can lead to unpleasant odor and spoilage. In the last water bath, hydrogen peroxide, the same product used for first aid, is added to the water to retard spoilage.
Rawhide treats made in foreign countries are identifiable because these are the ultra white ones. Some disreputable companies will use chemicals to whiten the hides, because it makes them more attractive to customers. Dogs could care less!
How often should I feed my dog rawhide bones?
Rawhide is not a food, but a safe chewable toy providing some important benefits. It is 80-85% protein, 10-12% fiber and moisture, and 1-2% fat. High in protein, low in fat, especially compared to pig ears and other pork skin products, and fewer calories per ounce than a typical dog biscuit. One or two hours of daily chewing is sufficient for dog. You should always make water available during and after the chewing activity.
If your dog enjoys chewing rawhide treats often, make sure he always has at least two or three rawhides to keep him busy. Providing variety makes the chewing more interesting. If your dog does not chew often, one or two rawhides may suffice. Infrequent chewers often leave a partially chewed rawhide and then lose interest. If this is the case with your dog, keep a fresh supply of new rawhides available to give every now and then. Infrequent chewers tend to enjoy softer rawhides.
Puppies tend to get themselves into a lot of trouble because they love to chew, chew, chew! Puppies need to chew to cut their new teeth and develop strong jaws. Do not punish a puppy for chewing. Instead, remove the inappropriate chew items and provide him with plenty of appropriate chew objects and change them regularly. Reward the puppy with verbal praise when he chews on his dog chews instead of household things. Puppies need soft rawhide chews to hold their interest.
However, you should always supervise a puppy when chewing to make sure he is not chewing off large pieces that could get caught in his throat. Also, do not give a puppy large amounts of rawhide, as their digestive systems cannot handle protein excesses well.
